The University of Alaska Anchorage Student Health and Counseling Center is recruiting for student workers for Peer Health Educator positions. If you are interested we invite you to apply.

Peer Health Educators (PHEs) play a vital role in fostering a healthy campus community at UAA. As part of the Health Promotion Team, PHEs serve as student leaders who advocate for wellness and support a culture of respect through education, outreach, and engagement.

PHEs work within a wide range of health topics, including:

● Sexual assault and domestic violence awareness and prevention
● Sexual health, consent and healthy relationships
● Mental and physical well-being
● Suicide prevention
● Chronic disease prevention/ early intervention, nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices
● Harm reduction, nicotine/ tobacco cessation and substance education
● Basic needs advocacy and response
● Community capacity building and workforce development

A key focus of this role is facilitating primary prevention bystander intervention strategies. PHEs train fellow students to recognize, prevent, and safely respond to situations involving potential violence, and how to support those impacted. We’re seeking high-energy individuals who are passionate about community wellness and excited to engage their peers in learning about health and well-being. PHEs receive comprehensive training in public health and health promotion frameworks and are involved in creating and delivering presentations, organizing events, developing campaigns, managing social media content, and more.

● Be enthusiastic about peer-to-peer education
● Show dependability, organization, and leadership abilities
● Work effectively both independently and as part of a team
● Have an interest in topics like public health, social justice, advocacy, and prevention

While majors in health sciences, public health, social work, and justice are a great fit, we welcome students from all academic backgrounds to apply. Prior experience in sexual assault prevention programming or involvement in campus organizations is a plus.

Minimum Qualifications:

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must have the following requisites: 1) They must be enrolled at the University of Alaska Anchorage with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; 2) Have a least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA); 3) Have completed one semester at the University of Alaska Anchorage with at least 6 credit hours.

Position Details:

This is a part time, student position at $17.53/hr, up to 10 hours per week, flexible around academic and personal commitments. Occasional evening and weekend availability required.
